Caught in all the publicity surrounding the release of the film 'Public Enemies' starring Johhny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cottilard I got excited wanting to watch the film. I didn't quite manage it, but opportunity came and the Telegraph was giving the book for free, so I grasped it and started reading the book hoping to be able to watch the movie once I had finished it.
Well, my plan didn't quite work out, as I finished the book just yesterday and the movie is not showing in any of the UK's cinemas for some months now, but anyhow I managed to finish this mammoth of a book.
Written by Bryan Burrough, this is the book on which the movie was based although the movie only had John Dillinger's story, whilst the book takes you through the whole story of the formation of the now world famous FBI (or Federal Bureau of Investigation for whoever never quite knew what the acronym stood for) and its 'War on Crime' back in the 30's.
So, you have the aforementioned Public Enemy No.1 John Dillinger robbing banks and getting away with it, but alongside his story you get the stories of all the other public enemies of the USA in the 30's like Bonnie & Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, the Barker gang, Alvin Karpis and others that I may be forgetting right now, as the book is full of names and stories of criminals robbing, kidnapping, killing and running for their lives until the FBI catches up with them and takes them down.
Enough with the summary though and let me tell you exactly what I thought of the book. It has 2 sides to it I decided, as you learn about the infamous era of all these criminals that caused chaos to the US of A in the 30's, but you also learn about how the FBI actually started, all its blunders and absolutely ridiculous and badly prepared operations to catch the criminals I mentioned before and all this through the exhaustive details into which Burrough takes you in this book.
I have to praise his efforts putting together this book, as we're talking about going through loads and loads of FBI records and everything you'll read in the book is actually real! Sometimes you feel like the book goes on forever (hence I went about reading it with a drugged turtle's pace) but you have to appreciate the lengths and breadths the author went to to find out about all those (sometimes unnecessary) details you read about.
All in all, I think it's worth the effort to read this book, it was definitely worth the time I spent reading it and now I'm ready to watch the movie!
Now, if you're patient, that's a John Dillinger documentary I found on YouTube, so feel free to watch it and get just that tiny bit wiser/clued-up about those Public Enemies.
Το καλοκαίρι που μας πέρασε κυκλοφόρησε στους κινηματογράφους η ταινία 'Public Enemies' (Δημόσιος Κίνδυνος) με τους Johnny Depp, Christian Bale και Marion Cottilard. Για καλή μου τύχη μια αγγλική εφημερίδα έδινε το βιβλίο δωρεάν, οπότε αποφάσισα να το διαβάσω ελπίζοντας να δω την ταινία αφού τελειώσω το βιβλίο. Το σχέδιό μου δε δούλεψε ακριβώς, μια που το βιβλίο το τέλειωσα μόλςι χθες, αλλά νιώθω ευχαριστημένος που κατάφερα και τέλειωσα αυτό το βιβλίο/μαραθώνιο.
Συγγραφεύς του ο Βryan Burrough, και το βιβλίο μιλά για την ιστορία του John Dillinger, του Νο.1 Δημόσιου Κινδύνου στις ΗΠΑ τη μαύρη περίοδο της δεκαετίας του '30. Επίσης το βιβλίο μας εξιστορεί τις δοκιμασίες που πέρασε το πλέον πασίγνωστο FBI στο ξεκίνημά του, τις βλακώδεις και αποτυχημένες προσπάθειές του να στήσει ενέδρες, να καταδιώξει κακοποιούς ή την ανικανότητα να χειριστούν οι πράκτορές του όπλα. Κι όλα αυτά στη μέση του 'Πολέμου κατά του Εγκλήματος' που κύρηξε το FBI στη δεκαετία του '30.
Εκτός από τον John Dillinger, το βιβλίο μιλά για τις ιστορίες των: Bonnie & Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, της συμμορίας Barker και του Alvin Karpis καθώς και άλλων των οποίων τα ονόματα αυτή τη στιγμή μου διαφεύγουν (και πιστέψτε με, είναι πολλοί) και πολλές ιστορίες για ληστείες, απαγωγές, θανάτους, καταδιώξεις και επιτυχημένες και αποτυχημένες προσπάθειες του FBI να βάλει ένα τέλος στη δράση όλων αυτών των εγκληματιών.
Το αξιοθαύμαστο για το οποίο πραγματικά παραδέχομαι τον συγγραφέα του βιβλίου είναι τα μήκη και τα πλάτη στα οποία πήγε για την έρευνα σε αυτό το βιβλίο, καθώς έβαλε λεπτομέρειες τις οποίες βρήκε μέσα σε ανεξάντλητα αρχεία του FBI και του Τύπου της εποχής. Μπορεί κάποιες φορές να βαρέθηκα τη ζωή μου διαβάζοντας για το τι φορούσε ο τάδε ή ο δείνα ληστής πριν ληστέψει την τάδε τράπεζα, αλλά δεν έχω παρά να βγάλω το καπέλο στον Burrough για την τρομερή του προσπάθεια να συμπεριλάβει όλες αυτές τις λεπτομέρειες στο βιβλίο του.
Σε τελική ανάλυση μιλάμε για ένα βιβλίο που εν τέλει μου άρεσε και άξιζε τον κόπο και το χρόνο που διέθεσα να το διαβάσω. Δεν ξέρω αν έχει βγει στα ελληνικά, αλλά αν το βρείτε, διαβάστε το. Αν πάλι δεν υπάρχει στα ελληνικά, μπορώ να το δανείσω σε όποιον το θέλει και να το διαβάσει στα αγγλικά :huhu.
Ακόμη θέλω να δω την ταινία, οπότε ελπίζω να αξιωθώ να τη δω σύντομα (μάλλον σε DVD πλέον).
